Sunset over Mono Lake Tufas 1
The Eastern Sierras near the Tioga Pass road are visible behind these eerie tufa formations at Mono Lake at sunset. At one point, these tufas were fully underwater- now they rest in a bed of sagebrush many yards from the current shoreline. Although Mono Lake has no water outlet, it does evaporate and in the past parts were drained, causing the shoreline to be at a very different level today than it was 75 years ago.
