Mono Lake Sunrise 2
The unusual formations at Mono Lake on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range are called 'tufas'. Basically, they are ancient pillars of limestone that formed from the mixing of calcium from underground springs, and carbonate from the waters of the lake. As the lakewaters receded, they appeared to rise from the lake bed.
